What We Do
Roots Lab is a Japan-based service specializing in the research and creation of Japanese family trees. We retrieve official family register (koseki) records from municipal offices across Japan, decode historical documents written in obsolete scripts, and compile the results into a beautifully designed family tree delivered digitally.
Why We Started
Japan has maintained meticulous family records since 1872. For the Nikkei diaspora in North and South America, these documents are often the only tangible link to the families their great-grandparents left behind when they crossed the ocean. We started Roots Lab because we believe every family deserves to know where they came from.
Our Approach
Every order is handled with care and discretion. We work in partnership with a licensed administrative scrivener (行政書士) to ensure all koseki retrieval is conducted legally and professionally.
